5 Questions to Ask During an Interview

Now that we’ve explored what not to say or ask in interviews, here’s a guide to some great questions you can ask to make a strong impression during your interview. whether you’re in the initial talks or in the later stages of interviewing, asking relevant questions shows your interest in the company and your keenness for the role.

By the end of the interview process, the employer should have a good understanding of your skills and whether you are a good fit for the role. In return, the employer will almost always finish by asking if you have any questions for them. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the company culture, the role, and to show your interest in the company.

It’s a good idea to be prepared with a variety of questions, as you may find the employer answers some of them during the interview anyway, particularly if they give you an explanation of the company’s background and the role the successful candidate would play within the team.

It’s always a good idea to prepare questions in advance. Below are 5 good examples of questions to ask at the end of an interview if you’re unsure of what to ask.

1. How Would You Describe the Work Environment Here?

This is your chance to determine whether you think you will fit in well with the company culture and like the dynamics of the organisation, as it’s important that you feel you’ll fit in and enjoy working in the environment, and not just if the job role is right for you.

2. What Do You Enjoy the Most About Working For This Company?

Asking the employer this question will help you learn a bit more about their favourite experiences in the role and what you could potentially look forward to. If the interview is going well and the conversation is flowing, this is a great opportunity to really understand the team and (likely) your line manager too.

3. Can You Describe the Day-To-Day Responsibilities of the Role in More Detail?

If the interviewer hasn’t already gone into detail on this question, this is a great time to find out more about your duties that have not been covered in the job description. This will help shape your understanding of the role and see if it suits your requirements.

4. Would There Be Opportunities to Progress Further Within the Role in the Future?

Asking this question will show the employer you have an interest in a long-term future with the company and are keen to discover the company’s focus on internal promotions. This is always a good sign as companies like to invest in their staff and would prefer to have a lower staff turnover and strengthen their teams.

5. What Are the Next Steps in the Interview Process?

This is a great question to end on as it will highlight your enthusiasm to progress to the next stage. It should also give you an indication of the timeframe of when you’ll know and how you’ll be informed.

Preparation is Important

Being prepared for an interview with relevant questions will generally work in your favour. If the interviewer is well prepared and has answered the questions already, it’s not the end of the world, and you can inform them that they’ve answered all the questions you had. And as we’ve said before, an interview is a two-way street; a company should be selling the job to you as a place you’d want to work at.
