Difficult Interview Questions Made Easy
Answering Difficult Interview Questions With Ease
Some interview questions may be trickier to answer than others and may put you on the spot. Interviewers aren’t trying to catch you out; they’re simply seeing how you interpret the answer, how you can deal with any questions or scenarios and help understand you a bit more.
Don’t stress, we have all the answers on hand to help you answer any question that may come your way, whether you’re in a preliminary call or a final-stage interview, we’ve got you.
Here are 4 ways in which you can ace those tricky interview questions:
1. Take a Moment
When faced with a question you cannot answer immediately, take a moment to pause and gather your thoughts. Taking a sip of water can allow you to think about your answer.
Avoid rushing to answer out of panic, as an impulsive response may not convey the message or professionalism you intend.
2. Stay Positive
Whatever the question, treat it as an opportunity to leave a strong impression on the interviewer. Even if you’re asked about a weakness or a situation that didn’t go as planned, focus on what you learned from the experience and how you turned it into a positive outcome.
3. Honesty is the Best Policy
Being honest and upfront about your experience will help the interviewers know that you can be trustworthy. If you don’t know the answer, it’s ok to admit that you don’t have an answer or want to come back to the question.
You can always turn something into a positive and use it to learn from.
4. Be the STAR
When answering a situational question (an experience you’ve had or a situation you’ve been in), always use the STAR method. This stands for Situation, Task, Action and Result.
Example of situational questions include:
- What are your strengths, and how have you displayed these in your previous role?
- How do you handle conflict?
- Describe a time you failed
- What’s your leadership style?
- How do you deal with criticism, and name a time when you’ve experienced it?
Interviewers want to understand how you think, learn, handle pressure, and work with others.
Your answers help them assess how you may respond in real-life situations and whether you can adapt to different challenges in the workplace.
Easy as 1,2,3 (4)
Some questions may catch you off guard e.g perhaps you don’t fully understand the question, haven’t experienced the situation before, aren’t sure how to respond, or the question feels completely unexpected.
Whatever the case, remember these key points: stay calm, take your time, and know that no question is truly unanswerable.
